Okay, on a major rant-fest, obviously. But hey! That's what these things are for, right?
Worse than most soaps, I feel that C/L are simply being shallow in their approach to things and that if they are going to tackle gay issues, they need to pay them the respect of better writing, and actors who can carry the storyline. Otherwise they are simply exploiting the gays who are paying for their subscriptions to watch the show as shamelessly as any homophobic but greedy network executive ever born.
The Drew storyline and the bug-chaser storyline are clearly cases in point.
And even the way the marriage was handled was ... frivolous. There really wasn't a lot of difference between what Ben and Mikey did ("hey, we're in Toronto, let's get married!") than some het couple getting hitched in Vegas. And the conversation that Ben and Michael had at the end to me made it worse. I mean, Michael didn't give any thought beforehand to the fact that when he got back to the States his marriage wouldn't be legal? How pathetic is that?
If they wanted to show how important it is for gays to have the freedom to marry, and really make the point, then IMO, they needed to show them talking about this opportunity as soon as they knew they were going to Toronto, and discussing all the issues then. That way it would have come across as a big decision taken seriously, with mature consideration and thought given to what they were doing. Not something that they did impulsively and thought twice about once they got home.
Oh, but that might have spoiled the dramatic impact. And wouldn't have given them their nicely boxed little final scene of the season.
Silly me!
Obviously that's more important than actually dealing respectfully with the issues you've chosen to bring into the scripts.

Too bad they didn't call you for suggestions. It was apparent they needed better advice and ideas for the entire season.

Which was bad enough, but to add insult to injury they did it extremely clumsily, so that their machinations were totally visible. Yuck!

Date: 31/7/04 12:52 am (UTC)I'm just about to do a major back up and burn a whole lot of stuff to CD to take with me just in case. That way at least my trusty laptop will be able to show me some QAF stuff to help me while away the time .
If you hear nothing from me in the meantime, that's why.

What will we do after this ends? I never had an obsession before. I think I might miss it.
Tokyo - too many people for me. Way too many.
Be safe, Wren

Date: 31/7/04 12:27 am (UTC)Season four crushed me. There were more than a few good scenes and a lot of good acting. But, I was hoping for more of the Brian and Justin show. I know. Silly woman. I sure didn't get it. I didn't even get what I thought they were promising me. I'm not holding out much hope for S5 either. But, I will have to watch and hope for the best.
If they would just give us what we want the fandom would thrive for years after the show is off air. Reruns would thrive and DVD sales would soar.
