Fix Index

I figured it was about time I put together a decent index of my fics. Because such an index would be really long, and kind of difficult to navigate, I've grouped them into various categories which in turn each have their own sub-index. The three long fics each have their own chapters index here as well.

Hopefully that will make it easy for anyone who's interested to find what they are looking for.

Christmas Stories
Experiment (series - complete)
Halloween Stories
Irish Stories
Justin!Rage Stories (series - "complete" - but there may be more to come)

These are just some random thoughts going through my mind. No idea if anyone is still reading this stuff, but if you are and care to comment I'd be happy to host a discussion.

I've read two fics in the last couple of weeks where Brian decided to cut ties with Justin while he was in LA and both authors took the stance that Brian was totally unjustified and that his decision "destroyed" Justin.

Not saying that Brian isn't at times a complete asshole, but at that particular point in time, I think Justin was actually a worse one.

Let's think about what it would have been like if the situation had been reversed.

What if it had been Justin who had been diagnosed with cancer, had fought through the initial treatments but was still a long way from getting any medical all clear. Meanwhile Brian gets a career opportunity in New York say. He goes off to explore it and decides, without apparently a moment's consideration for Justin's precarious medical situation, any thought that his partner might face a recurrence of a life-threatening illness, to take the opportunity which will mean that he's away from Pittsburgh for at least six months. He doesn't even call Justin to tell him about it. In fact, he goes back to Pittsburgh and at least two days later he still hasn't told him that he's leaving.

Can you imagine how everyone - both in the show and in the fandom - would have reacted?

And that is exactly what Justin did.

It's not just that he took the job with Keller without discussing it with his partner (and if he were my partner I'd feel entitled to be pissed about that under any circumstances) but he gave no thought at all to the possibility that Brian's cancer treatment might not have been effective. And what that would mean. None. It's not like Brian had a bone spur removed. This was a life-threatening illness, and it didn't even figure in Justin's consideration.

Personally, I think if I were Brian, I would definitely feel like I'd been given a pretty clear idea of where I came in my "partner's" priorities list, and it wouldn't give me a great deal of confidence in what choices he'd make if the Hollywood opportunities kept coming.

I've never understood why Brian was selfish and inconsiderate and all that shit to consider the job in NY in S1, but it was okay for Justin to take off to LA the way he did at the time he did at the end of S4.

If it's okay for Justin to put his career first, then Brian was equally justified in doing that in S1. If Brian's priorities were wrong then, then Justin's, IMO were even more wrong when he went to LA.

Just my thoughts.

Interested to know yours.

The is the second of the [livejournal.com profile] qaf_giftxchnge fics.

This request was for:

Fic. Fluff/ schmoop, angst, canon-compliant, hurt/ comfort, humor, sexy fun times Brian/Justin, post-canon (present day would be preferred, but as long as the characters are as canon-compliant as possible, I'm open). Either something holiday-related (including other members of the gang, if desired) or something more H/C geared (preferred if Justin is the one providing the comfort, but either way works).
Nothing AU in terms of canon deviations, crack!Fic, or basically anything that would exist outside of a canon-compliant realm. Nothing where B/J aren't (or at least don't end up) together.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This was a really strange one to write because when the first line came to me, I thought it was Justin "speaking". It was something of a shock when I found out it was Deb and from there the whole thing turned out completely differently to what I'd planned. But in the end I kind of liked it. It puts a different spin on the usual H/C fic and gave me an opportunity to play with the whole gang and see what they're up to now that it's 2016. I can only hope you're not disappointed by it.
I was going to leave everyone guessing whose "voice" they were listening to, but my beta didn't like that idea, so I've put the names in.
WARNING: For a change – no warnings. I'm even fairly nice to Michael.

This is the first of the Christmas fics I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] qaf_giftxchnge.

The request was for:

Fic. Fluff/ schmoop, angst, AU, hurt/comfort, Brian/ Justin or Brian/ Justin + Gus family times
I love Hurt!Justin with comforting Brian. I love feuding with lesbians about Gus. I love Justin being disappointed, but Brian coming through in the end..
AUTHOR'S NOTE: One of the things I really didn't like about the women (including Deb) in the last couple of seasons is how damned patronizing (or should that be "matronizing"?) they were towards Justin. He's not a child anymore. They seriously need to get over themselves. And I'm sure Justin would have felt the same way.
WARNING: Definitely anti-lesbians, and a little bit anti-Michael. This won't surprise anyone who is familiar with my fics, but here's the warning for everyone else.

I'd like to thank the ever-wonderful (and really incredibly kind) [livejournal.com profile] predec2 for the banner. It's lovely and I would never have thought to go looking for the image of Deb in the Santa hat, which was just perfect.

As indicated a couple of days ago, I have two fics in the QAF Gift Exchange this year.

It will be a few days yet before I'm allowed to post them here.

But in the meantime, here is a little Christmas Drabble that I hope you find amusing.

Brian Kinney does not do Christmas. His non-conventional family accept this; with two exceptions.

Gus and Justin demand cookies, decorations and of course, a fucking tree, complete with lights and presents.

One of them Brian might be able to ignore, but when they tag-team him, he’s lost.

The loft turns into some fucking Christmas wonderland, perfumed by ginger and cinnamon and lit by multiple strings of lights. Brightly wrapped gifts are piled under the tree and his sonnyboys sit surrounded by glue and color making endless paper chains.

Somehow, Brian doesn’t hate it as much as he thinks he should.

Happy New Year!

wren_kt7oz: (XXX_Christmas_wreath_prom)
The wonderful [livejournal.com profile] mander3_swish has once again co-ordinated the QAF Holiday Gift Exchange.

She has just posted the first offering (some delicious Justin icons).

A couple of my fics will be there, and there are usually some wonderful surprises.

Please check it out and leave some comments so we all know it's worth doing again next year.

It's here QAF Gift Exchange.

oh - and I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas, and Happy New Year!

At the end of a very difficult week, an amazing little vid clip that's the most hopeful thing I've seen all week.

Seems to have happened at one of the anti-Trump demonstrations in LA (although I'm not sure).

The women chanted "My body, my choice!".

The men responded: "Her body, her choice!"

Gave me shivers. Seriously.

wren_kt7oz: (ZZZ_Halloween title page)
Some years back I wrote a Halloween fic called "If I Were Brian Kinney". In it, while his friends were playing a Halloween game they called "If I Were Brian Kinney ...", a little green goblin took advantage of that to mess with Brian's head a little. Well, a lot really. (If you're interested, that fic is here If I Were Brian Kinney.)

I've always had it in mind to write a sequel where Justin goes looking for revenge, and this year I've finally done it. So here it is. (You don't really have to read the first, as long as you know that Justin wants revenge on both the goblin and their friends for jerking Brian around, you'll get the idea.)

This has been bugging me for weeks ... months, really.

In a perverse sort of way, I get Trumpism - that is the hateful xenophobic crap that he spouts where everyone who isn't a white male is to blame for all the ills of the world. I don't like it, but I get it.

But even if I bought into all that crap ...

Why would I believe The Donald when he says he can fix all that?

Why would I vote for a man whose sole field of expertise is in business, where he has a string (six, count them, six) of bankruptcies behind him?

What possible evidence is there that this person has the ability, the knowledge, the skills to achieve anything at all in life (given that he started his first business using Daddy's millions)?

That's what boggles me most.

It's not the hateful nature of his rhetoric. I absolutely understand who that's playing to.

It's the fact that people believe him when, without any demonstrable proof or evidence, he says he's the only one who can fix what they perceive to be wrong with their country.

That's what I don't get.

Can anyone explain it to me?

I really need to get an Andron icon. However ...

I know I owe responses to people and I definitely owe a new chapter of Homework and also my report on the Toronto Convention, but ...

If anyone has seen Andron, can they send me a message with what they thought Gale said in his last line in the film.

I don't want to go into details here, because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I just can't make out what he says and it's driving me nuts.

wren_kt7oz: (w_Wren)
I just wanted to post something on here - I guess to see what other people think.

I've made a decision that I won't follow or friend anyone who uses someone else's name in their "handle".

E.g. if someone calls themselves "Jane Kinney" or "Jenelle Harold", the chances are that those aren't their real names and there's something about that that makes me uncomfortable.

I recognise that many of us don't use our real names in social media - for a variety of reasons. And that's fine. But to adopt the name of a beloved character or, even more spuriously, of an actor/ singer/ performer I find ... it doesn't sit well with me.

So that's my new policy.

I wondered what other people thought.
wren_kt7oz: (RH_Cabaret2)
Okay - over the next week or so I'm going to try to post a little about the convention in Toronto and seeing Randy in Cabaret, but it might take a while, and this post is going to be all over the place.

After a trying trip (I started out at 6.00am in SF at the airport on the way to Winnipeg and never actually got there), I wound up having an extra day or so in Toronto.

That being the case, I took myself to the hockey hall of fame to indulge one of my other passions. I was a very happy hockey fann as my beloved Pens had actually won the Stanley Cup while I was flying across the Pacific to SF.

Anyway, for anyone who's interested, here's me in front of one of Mario's display cases. (You have to imagine me saying "Mario" in hushed and reverent accent.)

Arrived at the conference hotel on Thursday and started the process of catching up with so many friends made at other conferenes and events. We wound up at Woody's that afternoon and if anyone has one of the photos that we took on the steps, I'd love one because mine just didn't appear on my camera. No idea what happened there.

(Or actually, did that happen on Friday?)

Anyway, on Friday evening the convention proper started with the VIP dinner. For the first half, I was sitting next to Randy, and when they did a swap over, next to Makyla. What a honey she is!

It isn't encouraged to take photos of the guests at the dinners, and stuff, but instead I asked Randy if he'd take a photo of us and he was sweet enough to do that. I've fuzzed out a few of the faces, because I don't have their permission to share their images online. The ones left, I'm reasonably confident won't mind.

So here we are - taken by Mr. Harrison himself.

We all had a great time and Randy was in fine form. Very relaxed and chatty.

After the dinner, most of the gang headed off to a Pride event at "Babylon", which Randy was hosting, but I bailed in favour of a reasonably early night.

Everyone who went seemed to enjoy it though.

I'm going to leave Saturday and Sunday for now, since i need to reference my notes about who said what in the panels and stuff, and move on to Monday.

Caught up with two other friends who happened to be in the area but weren't at the convention. Had a really nice lunch with them. While I was waiting for them, I did a little wandering around and found this church. It blew me away. How wonderful it would be if all churches were so accepting.

(I've enlarged the banner at the side to make it easier to read.)

Holy Triinity Toronto copy.jpg

Tuesday morning it was a sad final goodbye and then off to the airport to get to San Francisco where I had a ticket to Cabaret for both Tuesday night and Wednesday matinee.

Amazingly, I ran into Danielle and Barbara at the theatre. Hard not to since they were sitting right in front of me!

The show was simply amazing. I can't speak highly enough of both the production and the performances - Randy's in particular. It's absolutely riveting and the final scene is simply chilling. There is a moment of shocked silence before the applause starts which is incredibly telling.

It's also very topical. For those who don't know the show, it's set in Berlin in the 30's during the rise of the Nazi party. It deals with the way in which people's willed ignorance, and their apathy and their fear, allowed the Nazis to come to power. The final scene very simply but quite shockingly illustrates the outcome.

it made me think about what is going on in the world today, with the Brexit vote and with Trump ranting about how he's going to use racial profiling.

Remember the words about how the Nazis got away with what they did ... they go something like ...

When they came for the Socialists, I didn't nothing, for I was not a Socialist. When they came for the Trade Unionists, I did nothing, for I was not in a Union. When they came for the Jews I did nothing, for I was not a Jew. When they came for me, I could do nothing, for there was no one left to speak out for me.

Start that out with "When they came for the Muslims ..." or "When they came for the Gays ..." and you can see how the forces of fascism could very easily get a very firm grip in today's climate.

Anyway, the show was great and Randy was wonderful and when we waited for him after the show he greeted us with hugs and thanks for coming, and when he heard I was flying home next night I got an extra hug and a little peck on the cheek for a goodbye.

Very nice.

Here are the photos that someone took. The first, where we're smiling is more than a little blurred. In the second we both look a little anxious/ bewildered because we couldn't work out what the person with the camera was doing. It was kind of funny, actually.

So that was that. Well, except that I saw the matinee on Wednesday as well (from the front row if you don't mind) and loved it just as much.

If you can get to a performance, i guarantee it will be worth your while.

If you need a little more inspiration, look at the pretty posters.

And without me.

Sorry about the reflections on the last two - was tricky trying to take them in daylight and worse at night.

Next post will be about the convention and I hope to have it up by the end of the week.
wren_kt7oz: (w_Wren)
Okay. So I'm in Toronto and trying to type this on my iPad which for me is a form of torture.

We're having a great time and when I get home I'll post stories and photos and stuff.

But a question in the Fab / Randy panel followed by a couple of short conversations with Fab got my mind working. Can't remember exactly what the question was but it generated comments from both Fab and Randy that the relationship needed to happen and that their biggest problem with it was that it ended so abruptly. Also, that the reason for their breakup made it seem that Brian's cynicism about love and relationships was justified.

So here's my theory ...

How much better and more powerful would it have been if the reason for the breakup wasn't Ethan cheating with the roses guy, but Justin coming to realise that he wasn't prepared to be marginalised in his boyfriend's life by Ethan's decision to go back in the closet.

So given they had 7 episodes in S3 to wind up the Ethan arc and have BJ reunite in 308, here's how I think it could have worked.

301 Justin facing the choice he's made.

302 Justin facing the fallout and beginning to explore the realities of this new relationship.

303 Ethan gets the offer, Brian's "nothing noble" speech.

304 Ethan makes the decision to sacrifice his authenticity - and Justin's - to his career ambitions.

305 the "cousin" scene

306 / 307 Justin realising what's really at stake here and choosing to leave Ethan and reevaluate how he sees Brian based on contrasting not their level of romanticism or their level or type of faithfulness but on their whole moral and ethical structure.

Now that, I believe, would have made for a far more powerful story, but also a much more solid basis for their future (BJ's I mean) than just that Justin was mad because Ethan cheated on him

What do you guys think?
wren_kt7oz: (w_Wren)
This one was for a prompt for the [livejournal.com profile] ekg_club Justin's Magical Heart-shaped Ass Day challenge. The prompt was anonymous, but it read: Put 2 people who hate each other in an elevator for 12 hours.
What happens? aka Justin and Brian AU - Love in an elevator.

As so often with me, the muses took me down a path (more than one, actually) that I totally didn't expect.

Hope you enjoy.

This time the request was for:

Fic. Angst, Hurt-comfort, Brian/Justin. Maybe one of the main characters gets sick and the other one has to comfort him, or was in an accident and the others have to worry about him … something like that … I hope that helps a bit … Other Specifications: nothing special.

It came out a little more angsty than I'd meant, and with the ending a little more schmaltzy. But hey! it's a Christmas fic.

Warnings for language. I've had a few complaints about the language in my fics. I'm not going to apologise for it - it's how I hear Brian and Justin both speak in my head. I refuse to turn them into mealy-mouthed GLC types just to avoid offending those who don't like the language that I believe is part and parcel of who they are (and is, from my perspective, entirely according to canon). You have been warned!

Comfort and Joy.jpg

Where's the F*cking Comfort and Joy When You Need Them? )
wren_kt7oz: (w_Wren)
This is one of two fics I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] qaf_giftxchnge.

The request was for: Fic. Hurt-comfort, Fluff. Justin learns that Brian was every night in the hospital. Other Specifications: maybe post 5.13, an appearance of Emmett would be lovely.

I did my best - although the best I could manage for Emmett was a kind of off screen voice over.

The only warning is for language. I can't write Justin, let alone Brian, and keep the language PC. I just can't.

As always it's intended for Adults Only so by clicking on the link you are asserting you fall into that category.

Just wanted to quickly post something about The Abominable Bride.

No spoilers - just two things.

One is that a lot of critics have been carping (not to say whingeing) about the stuff towards the end. Won't go into details, but wanted to say that the stuff that some people feel "spoiled" the episode was exactly the stuff that I found most exciting and which I most liked (okay, loved) about it.

So don't be put off by people who just wanted a cozy Victorian mystery as the Christmas special, because it's not like that at all and that's exactly what's truly great about it.

2nd thing under cut because it's spoilerish - no details but may give away a little of the plot direction )

Anyway, just wanted to say - because I've read a lot of tosh in the last day or so about this episode.

Which, by the way, I thought was simply brilliant and can hardly wait to see it again, so I've already ordered the dvd.

Hi everyone

It's that time of year again, and the gifts are being posted to Queer as Folk Gift Exchange.

There are fics and fan art and an absolutely lovely BJ vid to the Walker Brothers' First Love Never Dies that Giotto made for me.

It's simply delicious so please go and check it out, along with the stories and other stuff.

There's even one fic that I wrote, and another yet to be posted.

It's all a slightly belated Merry Christmas.

Oh, and Happy New Year!

wren_kt7oz: (w_Wren)
It's an article in the UK Daily Telegraph from back in October (here if you want to look for yourself):

30 Great Opening Lines

I admit that some of these really pack a punch, one way or another.

It starts with Jane Austen: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice (1813)

Continues with lines like:

"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
Leo Tolstoy: Anna Karenina (1878)

"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."
George Orwell: Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949)

"It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York."
Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar (1963)

“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.”
Franz Kafka: Metamorphosis (1915)

“The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new.”
Samuel Beckett: Murphy (1938)

I didn't have any quarrel with any of those, or with most of the others selected, come to that, until I came to this:

"There was no possibility of taking a walk that day."

Seriously? A "great" opening line?

For those who don't recognise it (because it's hardly memorable), it's from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Now I admit I am not an admirer of the Brontes. At some point in my life I've had to read just about all their stuff for one class or another and personally, I think they write total tripe.

However, I accept that some people love their stuff, and that's fine.

But surely a "great" opening line has to have more going for it than that it's the first line of a book that someone likes.

I'm putting the rest of this under a cut so if you don't read purely for enjoyment you can just ignore it completely. ).

I know I said I'd put the rest under a cut, but while I was looking up the first line of the Colour of Magic I came across this website:

The Colour of Magic Quotes by Terry Pratchett"

If you've never ready the Discworld books, I can only feel regret that you've missed out, alongside envy that you have all that pleasure before you. If you want to start, The Colour of Magic is the first.

Here are a few highlights:

“Rincewind tried to force the memory out of his mind, but it was rather enjoying itself there, terrorizing the other occupants and kicking over the furniture.”

“No, what he didn't like about heroes was that they were usually suicidally gloomy when sober and homicidally insane when drunk.”

“Some pirates achieved immortality by great deeds of cruelty or derring-do. Some achieved immortality by amassing great wealth. But the captain had long ago decided that he would, on the whole, prefer to achieve immortality by not dying.”

Seriously, the man was a comic genius. Go read his stuff. If you find the thought of all those Discworld books to much to cope with, try Good Omens, the book he wrote with that other genius Neil Gaiman.

And because I can't resist, just one quote from that (seriously, to cover all my favourite lines I'd have to quote just about the whole book):

“IT WASN’T A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. It should have been, but that’s the weather for you. For every mad scientist who’s had a convenient thunderstorm just on the night his Great Work is finished and lying on the slab, there have been dozens who’ve sat around aimlessly under the peaceful stars while Igor clocks up the overtime.”
