I have my own theory on Mikey. It is obvious really. He is retarded...developmentally impaired...or even autistic, definitely something along those lines. :P It's hinted at in canon:
You know how Brian always cuts in when Debbie clutches her Sunshine in a death grip, aka her usual hugs? I think he suspects how Mikey BECAME damaged.

Seriously. Being babied and literally smothered in his mother's bosom damaged something in Mikey's brain. There is no way Brian is going to risk Justin facing the same fate. He even gets uncomfortable seeing Emmett with his arms around Justin for more than a few seconds. o_O
