wren_kt7oz: (ZZZ_bj_christmas with gus)
At last, at last, at last, I've finished both my secret santa fic (I'm not allowed to post that yet, but it will be posted here somewhere in the next day or so: Queer as Folk Gift Exchange ) and my gusmas drabbles.

As always seems to happen once I get started working on these Gusmas prompts, the drabbles come and they all flow into a single story. It's happened like that every year.

For those who haven't caught up with the Gusmas thing, it's becoming a QAF tradition - 37 prompts are posted (one for every day between Thanksgiving and New Year) and pledges are made to donate to a GLBT charity. This year it's once again the Ali Forney Center in NY which was devastated by the floods.

If you'd like to make a pledge, or just read the entries, they're here: QAF Drabbles, including gusmas 2012.

If you can leave a comment on those you like, that would be great since some of the pledges are linked to the number of comments.

Anyway, here is this year's offering from me.

Warning: Lindsay and Melanie aren't exactly my favourite people which kind of comes across in this story.

Rating: NC-17

Author's Note: One drabble may only make sense to those who are familiar with Les Miserables, but now that the film's out, no one has any excuse for not seeing this wonderful, wonderful show.

As 2012 winds to a close I'd like to start this short post by apologising for not being around much of late. I know that I haven't been keeping up with my friends, that I've barely managed to follow some of my fave fics and that a new Homework chapter is way overdue. The last quarter of 2012 has been very difficult for me for a number of reasons - most of them work related. Anyway, my apologies to all the people I've not been in touch with.

I'd like to thank the people who have left me v-gifts. You can't know how much they have meant to me, even if it seemed like I was ignoring them. So thanks to [livejournal.com profile] chloris01, [livejournal.com profile] marny1[livejournal.com profile] my2cats[livejournal.com profile] spike7451 and [livejournal.com profile] masterglory. And even deeper apologies to anyone I've missed. LJ isn't letting me onto my profile page at the moment, so I can't double check.

And finally, I'd like to post this. Now, I've thought long and hard about putting this on here, because the last time I commented on US politics, it stirred up a bit of a hornet's nest.

But, somewhat to my surprise, I became mesmerised by the show The Newsroom, and when the Will McAvoy character made this speech in the final episode (or rather series of speeches they are not, in the episode, a single continous monologue), I almost felt like cheering. It was honestly one of the viewing highlights of my year.

So I'm putting up the youtube link.

To give you a little context, Jeff Daniels plays a news anchor at a cable news station where they decide that instead of "infotainment" they are actually going to broadcast the news in a way that is intended to inform and educate, not brainwash and downright deceive. The newsclips they use, like the one of John McCain are all real clips.

Enjoy! Or not. I'm assuming that my journal readers do not include religious fundamentalists of any persuasion, and the only reason that Tea Party members would be reading is to put me on some kind of 'subversive alien' list (I'll know who to blame if I have trouble getting into the States on my next visit).

I truly love this clip and especially the reference to the greatest enemy of the Tea Party. I completely agree.

Happy New Year, everyone. I hope that 2013 brings you joy and peace and laughter; that you never go short of happiness, food when you're hungry, drink when you thirst, comfort when you are sad and people to laugh with. If love finds you along the way, that's a bonus.

Have a good one.
