There were times in S1 where I quite liked Mel. And the hospital scene between Brian and Linds is such a dead giveaway about that marshmallow centre of his that I can't help but love it. But during the course of the five seasons, they totally lost me. By the end, I despised both of them.

As for Deb ... I don't care about her foul mouth. Or about her being so opinionated and interfering. But I will simply never forgive her for "The Slap" in S4. Never. Deb should know better than most that Brian was absolutely right - like me, she would have seen people die from AIDS-related illnesses, and, given his health status, in many ways Vic did get off easy. Plus, he had those extra years that canon made clear he'd never expected to have. He hadn't expected to return from their trip to Europe before S1 began. So what Brian said was both accurate and reasonable. But Deb lashed out, taking out her own guilt and regret on the man who in some ways was the most vulnerable in their family - especially vulnerable to abuse from a 'parent' figure.

I will never ever forget that moment. And, like I said, I could never forgive her for it.
