I just wanted to post something on here - I guess to see what other people think.

I've made a decision that I won't follow or friend anyone who uses someone else's name in their "handle".

E.g. if someone calls themselves "Jane Kinney" or "Jenelle Harold", the chances are that those aren't their real names and there's something about that that makes me uncomfortable.

I recognise that many of us don't use our real names in social media - for a variety of reasons. And that's fine. But to adopt the name of a beloved character or, even more spuriously, of an actor/ singer/ performer I find ... it doesn't sit well with me.

So that's my new policy.

I wondered what other people thought.

I find it creepy when people use someone else's real name, or part of a real name, as their "handle."

I'm glad it's not just me. :)

My screen name is after my son, Chad :)

I've never felt the need to use a celebrity's name in my screen name, whether on a fan site or on general social media.

I wouldn't say I'm "uncomfortable" but I can see you point.

I don't really mind as long as the person using the celebrity's name is not trying to impersonate her/him, I see it more like a tribute.

I think it's a newbie fangirl mistake. It's stupid, but I see it all
the time in other fandoms as well (the few I wander into! LOL!).

The thing that really bugs me, still (for obvious reasons) is the
"pretending to be a gay man" trope. That's still around. But after
Randall and Gage and others, I'm sick of that. And it's usually
perpetuated by older fans who know exactly what they're doing,
as opposed to oblivious newbies.

Just to add, I don't know how many people assumed that I
was "using" the name "Gael" because of Gale, but it was
a lot. Obviously, that's actually my name. Gael/Gale was a
total coincidence. But it's one reason why I started posting
as "Gaedhal" instead -- to distance myself from that perception.

I've noticed it lately in the Facebook QAF groups, where it's
pretty endemic. But it also seems to be a lot of foreign fans,
who also tend to be very new to QAF.

It's funny I have also wondered why people do use the names when I first saw it I actually thought it was the actors! I spent some time choosing mine and I had only just come to the interwebs when I chose it and QAF was my first fandom. I still love my handle 😊

I always thought it was weird when those with Gale or Brian related names would tweet at the real Gale.

I don't know if i feel uncomfortable, but I imagine that Gale or Randy or whoever feels wierd when someone using part of their name tweets them.

My screen name and my twitter handle is my actual name... I'm just too boring to have anything to hide.

I'm the same pretty much everywhere or at least a derivative of it. shortened of my name. Original or what. lol

I understand where you are coming from. It's not so much that I'm uncomfortable with it. I mean it doesn't bother me. I may sound a bit pretentious saying this and I don't mean to offend anyone, but to me it just seems juvenile. You know, something you'd do in jr. high. Like when my/our generation crushed on Shaun Cassidy or Scott Baio, we'd have the heart with EM + PS (Parker Stevenson...the other Hardy boy, *sigh*)

I think if I had ever done that and had the opportunity to meet that person, and they found out my handle had their name in it eg) E Stephenson....I'd be completely mortified! I'm a fan, but not that much.

I know it's completely harmless (well 99.9% are harmless, others not so much)and most just deem it as fun and perhaps wishful daydreaming. :)

I'm a little late to comment (was on a wonderful vacation). I've always thought that using a celebrity's name was odd, but I would hope that, for the most part, people are doing it as a kind of tribute, or perhaps a way of feeling closer to the person they idolize (the same way you'd wear your favourite band's t-shirt), rather than a desire to impersonate them. I often use an icon/avatar of Gale when I post here on LJ, but only when I'm talking to QAF friends. What does bother me is when people copy the username and icon of a celebrity, even if they're not pretending to be them, because it's confusing for their followers, especially on a channel like Twitter.

Just to add, with the "Randall" situation:

I thought Carol's ruse would be seen through a lot earlier (!) than
it actually was because her choice of names was so fangirly and
obvious: Randall and Big Brian. I mean, what were the odds?
But people who wanted to believe took that at face value, so...
